The Stolen Party Examined Using Ewen’s Framework of Consumption
Ewen describes class by what one has not what one does in society. He goes further by stating, “It’s not what you own, it’s what people think you own” (Ewen 183). Ewen expands further on the topic by saying “A growing market in cheap luxury items allowed other to purchase the symbolic accoutrements of status” (Ewen 185). This is why Rosaura is learning that material objects make someone of a higher class than someone who has less material possessions. Rosaura’s mother is older and wiser when it comes to the ways of the world and the materialistic views of the rest of the world, and tries to help Rosaura see them. Heker says, “On the morning of he party she discovered that her mom had starched her Christmas dress. And in the afternoon, after washing her hair, her mother rinsed it in apple vinegar so that it would be all nice and shiny” (Heker 316). Rosaura’s mother did this to help her look pretty like all of the other girls would look for the party. She did this do Rosaura would not look the daughter of an employee but like one of Luciana’s rich pretty friends. Ewen’s differences of class are shown more clearly when Rosaura goes to the party with who she thought was her friend.
Rosaura started out as being a little girl who did not think of her self as a lower class than her friend Luciana but as equal. Heker shows this when she says “Rich people go to heaven too” (Heker 316). She sys this in response to he mother saying that it was a rich people’s party. Rosaura also got mad when she told her mother that there would be a monkey at the party but her mother tried to tell her that there would be no monkey. This made Rosaura upset because “she thought it unfair of her mother to accuse other people of being liars simply because they were rich” (Heker 316). Rosaura went on to say that she too wanted to be rich someday and hoped that here mother would not stop loving her. Rosaura also felt that she was on the same level as the other boys and girls because she did not see that when she helped Senora Ines that it was because her mother was an employee. Rosaura thought that this she was able to help because she had been over to the house before and already knew the way around and she was a well behaved girl who did not cause problems. When in reality she did not even acknowledge the fact that some of the other kids might have been there before.
Rosaura thought that she was equal because she did her homework with Luciana. She thought that just because they were both in the same grade and both had homework that it was probably the same. We can infer into the story a little more and say that Luciana went to a privet school because her parents are obliviously wealthy. Senora Ines felt that her daughter deserved a better education because she was privileged unlike Rosaura. So if this was true Luciana was probably learning a more advanced curriculum than Rosaura. There fore it made the fact that they were doing their homework together merely a coincidence because they were both doing completely different things.
Rosaura at the end received a harsh lesson that her mother was right about those people. The lesson Rosaura received was when she was about to leave and all she wanted to do was tell her mother that she was wrong, that there was a monkey at the party and that everyone loved her and all of the boys wanted her on their team. Rosaura was also so excited to receive her gift that all of the other kids were getting when their moms came to take them home. The boys got yo-yo’s out of the blue bag and the girls got bracelets out of the pink bag. Rosaura wanted a yo-yo but did not want to tell anyone so because it was impolite. This caused her to daydream that she would get one of each for being such a good help. That was not the case. When it was Rosaura’s turn to get something out of the bag Senora Ines did not reach into the bag but instead into her purse and gave her 2 bills and said that she had truly earned them. This crushed her so much because the people that she had earlier defended to her mother betrayed her. The betrayed her because instead of getting a toy like the rest of the part guests she received payment like an employee like someone who was not a guest but a hired hand. This changed Rosaura’s view on rich people and made her realize that they did think that they were better than her. All she could do was bury her self in her mothers leg and cry.
The “Fore Play” was about sexual abuses and different types of it. A few actors showed different situation that college students might get into. There were imitations of rape and sexual harassment at work. But they focused more on what they called “the grey area” sexual abuses. For example, abuses that happen at parties, in bars, even when a couple of students get together to study. The main focus was on the solution to this problem, and that is the both sexes to make clear that the sex is consensual. They also brought up very tricky situations where it wasn’t clear who is fault when the abuse accrued. For instance, in the morning after party a girl didn’t remember what happened the night before but found herself naked in somebody’s bed. In this case the law says that if a woman doesn’t remember giving a consent (even if she really did) the man that she was with is considered a sexual abuser.
My opinion on “the grey area” abuse is that in most cases it wouldn’t happen a person didn’t allow it to happen. Just like if that girl didn’t get so drunk did not know what she was doing she would not end up in a stranger’s bed.
I Ewen’s essay “The Chosen People” he states that people live in the facts of their present social position, and they take their economic future for granted. Ewen’s theory of the middle class trying to hide their social position is supported by Rosaura’s mother in the Heker’s essay “The Stolen Party”, where she denies that she is poor. According to Ewen “the middle class lived suspected between the factor their present social position and the promise, which they took for granted, of their economic future.” (Ewen 189) Peoples position is taken for granted because no matter where their social standing is they can grow into their economic future by buying stuff. This quote is recognizing that people can grow in social standing by making it look as though they rich. Because of class, as Ewen would explain it, the Senora Ines gives Rosaura money instead of a present, “in her hand appeared two bills. ‘you really and truly dissevered this,’ she said handing them over”(Heker 320). On the other hand, it shouldn’t be considered a bad thing because of the way that Rosaura’s family viewed as poor, the Senora Ines decides that the girl needs money more than a toy, when rich kids don’t need to worry about money. This situation shows that in most cases no matter how hard you try to hide your destitution people around you still know the reality. Adult thinking is different than child’s in term of expenses. Rosaura didn’t want the money; she wanted the toy, the “thing”.
The girl was taught by her mother that she is not capable of being even a Luciana’s friend, the girl whose mother owns the house where Rosaura’s mother works, and that she can never make it to high social status. As the girl’s mother commented when Rosaura tried to prove that she is worthy to go to the party: “The problem with you, young lady, is that you like to fart higher than your ass.”(Heker 315). She was forced to take the money given to her as an insult and as she does not disserve the same treatment as other kids at the party. She was convinced by her mother that the things that you have define who you are. That is exactly what Ewen says in his assay “’middle class,’ constructed out of images, attitudes acquisitions,..”(Ewen 189). Even if Senora Ines did not necessarily mean to humiliate Rosaura and her mother, by giving the girl the money, she did her own classification of who should get a toy and who should get the money. This act made Rosaura stand out from the rest of the children which people in middle class try to avoid. Ewen’s phrase simply proves that “The middle classes have the strongest motives for never making parade or public complain of their poverty”(Ewen 192)
Rosaura’s disappointment and painful experience at the end of the party “Rosaura’s had a cold, clear look that fixed itself on Senora Ines.”(Heker320) this reaction we can blame only her mother. She should’ve not tought her dougheter to be so materialistic. Instead she should have focused on the friend ship between Rosaura and the Luciana and she should have not tried to prove that inequality of families’ income makes it impossible for Rosaura and the other girl to be friends.
Through the whole essay Ewen defines how the materialistic things matter to the middle classes so more much than what is inside a person’s mind, their spirituality and other higher qualities. At the same time Heker gives a lot of attention to all of those fun things that they had at the rich girls birthday party like the monkey and magician which Rosaura’s mother takes very negatively “’Monkey at a birthday? Get away believing any nonsense you’re told’” (Heker 316). This proves what Ewen’s idea that poor people are jealous of the rich because they have more “stuff” and want to consume more to just so visually they could have more power “’Middle class’ status was becoming founded purely on one’s ability to purchase, construct, and present a viable social self”(Ewen 194). Also Heker focuses very little on the relation between Rosaura and Luciana which exactly proved Ewen’s point that acts that do not involve consumption for more power do not matter.
Sometimes when scientists and philosophers discuss human nature, they forget that they are also analyzing themselves. In Brody’s essay “Social Power of Expert Healers” he talks about how experts abuse their power by giving examples of how doctors can harm their clients’. Brody gives an example, where Dr. Walsh makes some poor decisions: “Dr. Walsh withheld frank discussions about prognosis because she felt that her patient was not ready to hear them”(122) which leads to deaths of two people. Ewen, an author of another essay “Chosen People”, defines how people with power are seen in our society and how those without power try to make it seem like they have power. Within their discussions of power, Brody and Ewen both analyze the nature of expert power as well as unintentionally pointing out their individual uses and abuses of that specific power.
In his essay, Ewen, “Chosen People” uses the generality that every individual belongs to the middle class, while Brody uses the same generality but applies it to every expert. Do all the experts abuse their power and do all of the middle class pretend that are elite? Brody tries to show readers that they should not trust experts due to differing abuses of power. He says that, “No expert has to own responsibility for making any value-laden judgments”(116). By examining this quote we Brody’s use of expert power as he attempts to change people’s mind.
In comparison, Ewen puts people in categories which define them by what they have. He attempts to prove that people’s personalities and lives are defined by their belongings. This demonstrates that a person’s purpose in life is built around making money just so they can get more “stuff” and have higher social status. Ewen simply forgets or ignores the fact that there are many people with other values that do not revolve around money and possessions. In the begging of the essay he uses the example when a Gold Card application arrives articulating how important and prestige it is to be an owner of such card. By using this example Ewen shows that everybody wants to be special and that everybody wants to be aristocratic without ever mentioning that in fact a lot some people are simply motivated by happiness and personal success, as we see, which Ewen attributes only to the middle class.
Ewen says, “The middle class have the strongest motives for never making any parade or public complaint of their poverty. To advertise one’s self destitute, is to be without credit,”(192) This quote shows that people impoverished try to show that they are not poor due to the way they will be perceived. Being in the middle class is different than being impoverished and is more acceptable. That’s why the middle class does not publicly complain about their position; they have no reason to. The middle class man is the one who is comfortable in the position he is, doesn’t struggle for basic needs and has an opportunity to get higher status by working hard.
It’s hard to disagree that people in general assume other person’s position in society by what belongs to him, but it’s not true that everybody’s main focus is to make themselves look richer than they really are. Ewen states, “a rise to a notion of class defined, almost exclusively, by patterns of consumption.”(187) this means that Americans more and more care about their appearance then their substance. Ewen focuses on the American style and on the American Dream, however he cannot really prove his point without giving an example from another nation, which would show whether or not the American way of life does in fact stand out. Brody does the same by not mentioning how without doctors and their power, people would be in a very difficult situation. Brody’s second part of the essay starts as: “it’s a little use to analyze the power of the healing experts in our society if the only consumption is that the experts are bad people (or else that the society is bad)” (116). by telling us that it’s pointless to discuss the expert powers. However after this quote he tells the Dr. Walsh story and her improper decisions, which argues what he said previously. This confusion points out his misconception of power.
Everybody has their own power, and all people depend on each other in one way or another. There have to be different groups and classes of people in society. For instance, some people own a company and that gives an opportunity to others to have a job like a designer, an engineer, a janitor. However it is common knowledge that the CEO and the janitors will not make the same amount of money. It’s not because one job matters less than another but because that’s just how it works in today’s society. Social classes could be compared to the animal world where poverty is at the bottom of the food chain. Ewen states, “producing icons of material abundance for some, [and] bringing misery into lives of many others.”(186) this quote supports that there are poor and rich sides in society that always existed, just like there always have been predators and prey; without one there is no other. Changes could be made only on individual basis. For example, a person that cannot afford to pay for higher education can still get it by hard working, earning scholarships and financial aid. So “if there is a will there is a way”, just like in nature your way of life depends on your intelligence. We can use our owned power to make changes in our lives. In Brody’s essay the decisions are made by sides, the doctor and the couple of potions. However, in the end who gets blamed is the one with more expert power and, possibly, bigger salary.
As we come to the conclusion it’s clear that these essays have a very little purpose because Brody and Ewen bring out some specific problem but do not make a clear solution. In a way both authors tell us what we already know; some times experts make mistakes and that there are differences between classes in society. As we have seen, being an expert in some field makes a person see a situation from one a single point of view, and the essays by Brody and Ewen demonstrate. Just like doctors don’t always believe in magic and priests in evolution, Brody and Ewen try to argue their bias point of view by explaining why some situations occur without fully explaining or understanding their individual abuses of power.
Sometimes when scientists and philosophers discuss human nature, they forget that they are also analyzing themselves. In Brody’s essay “Social Power of Expert Healers” he talks about how experts abuse their power by giving examples of how doctors can mess up their clients’ lives. Ewen an author of an other essay, defines how people with power are seen in our society and how those without power try to make it seem like they have power. Within their discussions of power, Brody and Ewen both analyze the nature of expert power as well as unintentionally pointing out their uses and abuses of that specific power.
Ewen in his essay “Chosen People” generalizes every individual that belongs to middle class, while Brody generalizes every expert. Do all the experts abuse their power and do all of the middle class pretend that are elite? And to which social class does Ewen thinks he belongs? Brody tries to show readers that they should not trust experts partly or at all. He says, “No expert has to own responsibility for making any value-laden judgments”(116). By using his expert power he attempts to change people’s mind.
Ewen puts people in categories which define them by what they have. He proves to us that people’s personalities and lives are explained by their belongings. Ewen simply forgets or ignores the fact that there are many people with other values that do not revolve around money and possetions. By using the example about the Gold Card, he shows that everybody wants to be special, everybody wants to be aristocratic without mentioning that some people are happy when they have what they need, and they don’t need to prove to others that they are happy and successful.
Ewen says, “The middle class have the strongest motives for never making any parade or public complaint of their poverty. It’s hard to argue that people in general judge each other by what belongs to them, but it’s not true that everybody’s main focus is physical possessions. Ewen says, “a rise to a notion of class defined, almost exclusively, by patterns of consumption”(187) which means that Americans more and more care about their appearance then their substance.
